Large complete chondrite

This is a complete individualof Jiddat al Harasis020, an L6 S4 W4 chondrite found in Oman in 2000. This stone is completely fusion-crusted, which is pretty unusual for JaH 020, and for Omani meteorites in general. It weighs 435.074 grams and measures 11.3 by 6.3 by 4.5 cm. Its a nice hand-sample of a non-NWA meteorite.

The published total known weight of JaH 020 is around 2 kilograms, but it is a much larger find, with hundreds of kilograms of paired (and some unpaired) stones attributed to that number by numerous finders.

This stone was purchased from a Russian mineral dealer at a mineral show in the US several years ago and was exported years before Oman banned the export of meteorites.

In 1999, meteorite hunters discovered that the desert in southern and central Oman were favorable for meteorite hunting. The gravel plains in the Dhofar and Al Wusta regions of Oman, south of the sandy deserts of the Rub al Khali, had yielded about 5,000 meteorites as of mid-2009.

The recovery of meteorites from Oman is currently prohibited by national law. This new law was implemented before it was publicized, resulting in

the prolonged imprisonment of a large group of meteorite hunters from Russia and the US, as well as several other European countries.
